317 Pounds on first day of 2010 BASS Eastern Regional on Lake Gaston

An absolutely beautiful day welcomed the 98 anglers competing in the 2010 BASS Federation Nation Eastern Regional Tournament Friday on Lake Gaston and they responded by bringing over 317 pounds of Bass to the tournament scales.

On top of the leader board for the first day was Joe Trinko from the Hoke County Club who posted 13.2-pounds of fish with a 5.35 pounder good enough to claim second in the largest fish category. If that fish had weighed just 3/100th of a pound more he would have claimed that category also.

Rounding out the top five for the day was Eric Schell, also from the Hoke County club in second with 13.02 pounds; NC BASS Federation Nation President Chuck Murray representing the Sandy Creek Club nailed down third with an even 12 pounds of Bass; Phil Bain from the Vance-Granville Bass Masters sits in fourth with 11.58 pounds, while Steve Strickland from the Sandy Creek Club holds down the fifth place position with 11.26 pounds.

All told the contestants did much better than many recent tournaments that saw almost 2/3 of their field of contestants get skunked. This group’s 98 contestants had only 27 zeros showing in the total column, but a very good day on Saturday could see any one of them winning this tournament. It has been done before….
